The BITS summer intensive Summer Program will have an open house on Temple's Main Campus. Come view participants' work and meet the staff members with whom students have been working throughout the summer. The event is open to students, faculty, friends, and family.

The Open House takes place on the ground floor of the University Services Building. The building is located on the corner of Broad and Oxford Streets, right across from the Pearl Movie Theater. Closest subway stop is Cecil B. Moore (Broad Street Line).

Ashley is the mentor of this team and a recent graduate from Temple University with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. She has thoroughly enjoyed working with University Green as they explored environmental initiatives in Philadelphia and around the world, while using social media to increase the awareness of such projects. Upon completion of this program Ashley will be working with the Energy Coordinating Agency on weatherization projects in Philadelphia.

Melissa Mak is a senior at Penn State University, majoring in animal bioscience. She graduated from W. B. Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences. She is currently working with the Philadelphia youth Network in ISTRG as an intern. In this program, she created her own blog and tweeted on Twitter. She learned about using twitter and blogs to spread the word about global warming and environmental projects happening in Philadelphia. In the future she plans to continue spreading the word about global warming. She hope that one day Philadelphia will be the greenest city in America and that other cities will follow their example and start going green as well

Mohamed Alli is going to be a freshman at Penn State Abington in the fall and currently works with the Information Technology Society Research Group (ITSRG) at Temple University. His mission is to blog about environmental awareness in Philadelphia. He has learned the importance of Philadelphia being the greenest city and the positive impact it will have on our future such as saving energy, lessen our dependency on foreign oil, having a clean environment, and saving money. He promises to to practice green habits like turning off the lights or recycling and also spread the word to others. He is excited that Philadelphia plans to become the greenest city and hopes that other cities will follow its example or try to compete.

Sadira Williams is a graduate of South Philadelphia High School who is currently working as an intern for the Philadelphia Youth Network. Through this experience at Temple, Ms. Williams has worked on increasing the awareness of environmental issues in Philadelphia. She has learned so much such as; blogging, researching, using html code, surfing other websites on the Internet, and gaining communication skills. Sadira will further her education at an University in which she will major in radiology.

Thanh Nguyenis a freshmen at Penn state, he is going to major in Medical Science and currently working with (ITSRG) at Temple University. Before he joined the ITSRG he didn't know how to use twitter, blogger or podcast. After the program, he feels he knows how to do everything that deals with technology. He knows how to post URLs, embed videos, and change the backgrounds on twitter. He hope that this knowledge can be used in the future.

Phuoc Nguyen is going to be freshman at Penn state Abington in fall. He is currently working with the internship group at Temple University Philadelphia youth network & ITSRG. During the program he learned how to create a blog, twitter and how to edit html. His mission is to blog and twitter about recycling, green jobs and environment issues. In the future he will use his knowledge to help the people in Philly with their issues by creating Blog and twitter to help them spread the word just like he did in the program. He is hopeful, that what he did in the program will help change the people in Philly and helps in creating greener jobs.

Ahdrese Willis was born in Philly on January 30, 1995. He just graduated from Morris E.Leeds Middle School and now attends Swenson High School, studying the Plumbing trade. He doesn't plan on going to college right away, but instead plans on going to another trade school to master plumbing. If he does go to college, he plans to go for chemistry or life science. Ahdrese describes himself as "5'10 with brown eyes, slim, energetic, funny, fun to be around,and very social." Ahdrese is very fun to be around; when you're down he finds the funniest things to say that brighten your day. His height comes to use when he is on the his basketball team, and the tallest on the team.He loves meeting new people, even though he has tons of great friends.

Environmental Engineering Group

We interviewed the Environment Engineer Group today. Their mission is to promote awareness of the environment and conduct research specifically on the Exxon Valdez Alaskan Oil Spill. The problem with the oil spill is that the oil is trapped in the ground and the soil just keeps it there. So the team are looking at soil samples taken from the beaches where the oil spilled to see what exactly make the soil so impenetrable.Check out their blog at http://www.templeengineer.blogspot.com/

On July 28, 2009 University Green interviewed a group called Emergency Preparedness. Their goal is to come up with a plan for senior citizens when an emergency occurs. This group is going to create a slide show to demonstrate steps about preparing for emergencies. University Green thought that their topic was very important because the city doesn't prepare senior citizens for tragedies.

The wagner free institute for science News

On Friday June 31 our group went to the wagner free institute for science. In there they have alot of old material like philosophy, religion, science, and educational reform. The extensive journal collection includes research done by most major European and Asian scientific societies and many publications from smaller scientific societies, and also they have auditorium from 1900 where science education classes were taught. we did an activity called a "scavenger hunt", where we went around the museum to find creatures that matched the given hints. In my opinion, I think the meseum is kind of cool because they have all different kind of species and can you believe they acually have one dinosaure bone in there.

Within the next week, we will create a podcast about the effects of climate change in Philadelphia. We will research the change it's creating, and what the city government and residents are doing to fix damages.

On Friday July 17, 2009, University Green interviewed an internship group that is creating a website for parents and those unable to read. The internship is creating the website so that parents know what is going on in the school, because the school fails to inform the parents of school activities. We feel that parents should be informed about the progress of their children and it is sad that the school does not care enough to keep parents involve. Parents in the community want to be involved and it is proven when they work with the interns to help create the website.

Some parents care, but some are illiterate and the website is trying to help them by making videos in multiple languages. This is going to be very helpful and it is making a huge change. This website is creating a more welcoming community and comfortable environment for students and parents.

Mock Trial

Mock Trial

We just interviewed the Mock Trial group in room 405 at Temple’s main campus. We discovered that they were planning a mock trial case on Badger aero mechanical. This company created windmills, which polluted the groundwater. They are debating whether it is legal or illegal to dump chemicals from the creation of windmills. Not only did we learn about what they are researching, but we also found out a little about them as a group. They are BITS mock trial, but they call themselves the G squad. They enjoy socializing with peers and mentors. Everyone in this group has their own role in the case that they will play, such as an attorney, witnesses, defendant, and plaintiff. At the end of the program, they will be acting in front of former mayor John Street. The program will help them become a better public speaker and build social skills. Second Life Interview

Today, we interviewed the Second Life & African American History group, led by BITS program mentor, Liv. The program is based on the African American Landmark Project, which highlights several landmarks, locations, and people throughout the city of Philadelphia through the use of blue signs placed at various sites.

Through their mission of gaining understanding of Philadelphia landmarks, they hope to achieve their goal of creating a virtual simulation of these landmarks through the use of Second Life software.

They plan on choosing and focusing on one specific landmark or area, conducting research on the sites, and documenting and incorporating the information and images into the Second Life program. Today, the group will be visiting the Legendary Blue Horizon and Progress Plaza, located on Broad and Oxford Street.

When asked about the benefits of the program, the students said they were interested in the project because it gives them a chance to learn about their cultural history.

Hello everyone we are a student internship group with the Philadelphia Youth Network blogging about the environmental research projects happening across Temple University's campus.
